Entropic Communications And Intel Collaborate To Deliver Industry's First MoCA 2.0 Based Video Gateway

Gateway Enables Service Providers to Accelerate the Availability of New Whole-Home Services by Distributing Virtually Unconstrained Bandwidth To and Within the Home

CHICAGO (The Cable Show – Booth #563), June 14, 2011 — Entropic Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENTR), a leading provider of silicon and software solutions to enable connected home entertainment today announced a strategic collaboration to develop a new class of industry first, advanced video gateway and client set-top box reference designs, based on the Intel® AtomTM processor CE4200 and powered by Entropic's MoCA® (Multimedia over Coax) 2.0 solution to enhance the delivery of broadcast and broadband content to the TV.

The need for delivering multiple streams of high definition (HD) video into the home is becoming a key requirement by consumers around the globe, and service providers are looking for ways to deliver what their customers want. By combining the power of the Intel Atom™ processor CE4200 with Entropic's MoCA 2.0 silicon and software solution, the companies are creating robust, highly-reliable reference designs that can be used by OEMs to develop products for service providers—cost effectively and in fastest time to market.

"As service providers look to enable new services, applications and IP gateway/client architectures, the need for more bandwidth in the home will become increasingly more important," said Vinay Gokhale, senior vice president, Marketing and Business Development, Entropic Communications. "By using the Intel Atom CE4200, we are further enabling service providers to deliver more whole-home services and at the highest video performance speeds in the connected home entertainment industry."

"The Intel Atom CE4200 processor is capable of transforming a number of HD video streams for protected delivery to multiple IP devices in the home," said Bob Ferreira, general manager, Cable Segment, Intel Digital Home Group. By combining the latest in our technologies, OEMs can leverage the power of both solutions to seamlessly upgrade their products from MoCA 1.1 to the more powerful MoCA 2.0 backbone—enabling the delivery of next generation solutions that integrate the Internet experience with TV at fast speeds."

Designed for the new emerging category of video gateway applications, the Intel Atom processor CE4200 is a system on a chip that delivers the high performance and the hardware video and graphics acceleration to enhance the delivery of broadcast and broadband content to the TV. In addition, it has the ability to overcome in-home bandwidth issues by processing multiple simultaneous streams of video and by transcoding streams to H.264 for tablets and others devices within the home.

Entropic's MoCA 2.0 solution is the next key enabling technology that delivers a 'no excuses' whole-home network for HD video and streaming media services—all over existing coax in the home. Offered as a complete end-to-end MoCA 2.0 solution with MAC, PHY, analog, RF transceiver and RF front-end functionality, it provides 400 Mbps of application throughput in its basic configuration, and is scalable to support 500 Mbps Turbo mode and 800 Mbps /1 Gbps in channel bonded modes. These capabilities make it the highest performing home networking solution available today; delivering more than twice the speeds of existing MoCA solutions. Additionally, by using the latest 40nm semiconductor wafer processes, Entropic's solution transforms current coaxial infrastructure into a highly-efficient, affordable and reliably predictable whole-home entertainment network, ready to meet the new video delivery demands required by converging broadcast-broadband networks.

Entopic has also developed an active MoCA 2.0 ecosystem; delivering innovative solutions that enable Pay-TV service providers to optimize subscriber value. Entropic will be highlighting these solutions at The Cable Show 2011, booth #563, June 14-16, at McCormick Place in Chicago.
