JANUARY 25, 2007 -- Tellabs (search for Tellabs) marks a milestone in delivering high-bandwidth video and data services to consumers by shipping its one millionth optical network terminal (ONT).

The Tellabs 1600 Optical Network Terminal Series -- which the company claims is the industry's most comprehensive ONT portfolio -- delivers high-quality bundled voice, video, and data services over fiber to the premises (FTTP).

"PON passive optical network technology is widely used by most major service providers that are pushing fiber deeper into their networks," according to Ken Twist, vice president of broadband research and technology consulting at Ovum. "These optical networks help service providers efficiently meet consumers' demand for bandwidth now and provide a strong foundation for service providers to deliver new services in the future."

According to third-party analysts, Tellabs is the leader in North American fiber access. The company's ONTs are among the first to be certified by the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA). MoCA reduces FTTP costs by eliminating the need for new inside wiring.

Tellabs says it is moving its ONT product line forward to include Gigabit PON (GPON) technology. The newest ONTs, now in customer evaluations, include the 1600-712 Single Family Unit GPON ONT, and the 1600-721 and 1600-726 Multiple Dwelling Unit GPON ONTs. These ONTs are a main component of the company's DynamicHome Solution, delivering 2.4 Gbits/sec downstream and 1.2 Gbits/sec upstream.

"Consumers want more advanced personalized services such as HDTV, VoIP, and on-demand programming," says Carl DeWilde, executive vice president of broadband products at Tellabs. "Our customers are meeting those demands with higher-bandwidth solutions such as Tellabs' newest GPON ONTs. With our help, they are building networks that enable a richer multimedia experience today and well into the future."
